My Classroom, My Rules...

I can’t believe we’ve been here almost a month. This is just crazy. We’ve only got about three months left. Time really does fly. I’m really surprised I haven’t gotten homesick yet. I honestly feel it’s because I just haven’t had time. We’re up every morning by 630 and we go to bed by 10.

Our lives are really ever interesting on the weekends. This weekend is completely jam packed. On Saturday, we’re going to Caracal and this should be quite the adventure. We’re going near the Guatemalan border, so we’re traveling with a tour guide and an armored guard, just to make sure we’re safe. It’s apparently quite the trek to get there. This means a couple hours on a road that barely exists. This will be an all day affair. We’re leaving our house at around 6am and we probably wont get back until around 7 that night. But we get lunch, so we’re good on that part!

On Sunday, we’re going over to Ian Anderson’s Caves Branch thingy, probably got the name wrong, but we get to spend the entire day there and do as many activities as we want, for free! We were over at Sharon’s house the other day and a friend of hers dropped by. He happens to work for the place and asked her if she had any students who would be willing to go and get their pictures taken. We just happened to be there and so now we’re the new models! We get to go repelling into caves, biking through the jungle and cave tubing, all while getting out pictures taken and all for free! So this will be really exciting. We’re pretty sure we’re going to be famous. We’re thinking we’re going to be in the brochures and possibly the website. So look at world, here we come J

I guess onto the more serious stuff. I started teaching and it’s been quite the adventure. Students down here love to talk. I’m pretty sure it’s more that students back in the US. I think it’s because their not constantly texting every minute of every day. But I’ve been struggling with keeping my class under control. I’m tired of yelling at them and waiting for them to shut up. Whoever says teaching is easy has clearly never taught a day in their life.

The one thing I’ve been struggling with the most keeping the lesson to where they can understand it. I really have to put it in words that they will understand. This is difficult for me because I’m used to teaching students about The Scarlet Letter or The
Great Gatsby.
So I really feel as though I’m teaching 6th grade. It’s difficult, but I think I’ll get the hang of it soon.

Funniest thing happened today, too. I had this one kid who loves to touch things. He’s the troublemaker in the class. He was being a brat today and not doing anything I told him. As soon as the bell rang, he got out of his seat and ran out of the room. He thought I had no idea who he was, but I asked one of the good students his name…and I got it. He would run back and peek into the room, see I was there and then ran away. I followed him outside and waited to talk to him. I told him that if he does one thing wrong tomorrow, he’s getting a detention. So it looks like I’ll be writing my first detention. Is it weird I’m excited?? Hahaha.
